When You Smile is a well-proportioned, very attractive mare born and raised at Brodda Stud. Her dam is In the Air Tonight, who was a complete and talented racehorse. She won her debut as a two-year-old. She also set her record of 11.6 as a four-year-old. She was then beaten in a photo finish after running wide. She showed her strength during a five-year season in France against tough competition in several races. Among other things, she finished third in a tough field in a monté race at Enghien, where she finished fastest of all. Her grandmother, Sugar Speed, had racing success and finished third in the Norwegian Stoderby and second in the Jarlsberg Grand Prix for four-year-old mares.
